Our office performs breast reduction entirely by liposuction, which is a much simpler and safer procedure than the traditional surgical approach of reduction mammoplasty.

Traditional reduction mammoplasty is a lengthy surgical procedure. It requires general anesthesia, significant cutting of skin (resulting in scar tissue), moderate to severe post-operative pain, and a prolonged recovery period, usually 2-4 weeks. Additionally, it frequently involves excising (cutting out) the nipple/areola complex and transplanting it to a new location. Numbness or decreased sensation is a common side-effect.

Breast reduction by liposuction is done in our office, under local anesthesia. Twilight sleep (conscious sedation) can be used, if the patient prefers, but is not necessary. Only a few, very small openings (2 or 3mm, about the size of the tip of a retractable ball point pen) are made, and these typically heal with minimal or no scar tissue. Not only can we reduce breast size (typically 2-3 cups difference), but we can usually anticipate a natural lift to occur, often about 2 or 3 inches higher than before the procedure. This occurs because weight is removed from the ligament which suspends the breast (Cooper's ligament), allowing it to contract and lift the breast naturally. Recovery is rapid, and patients are back to work within 24-48 hours. Post-op pain is minimal.

Although breast reduction by liposuction is safer and less invasive than traditional surgical breast reduction, the degree of lift is not as marked nor as predictable.
